Carlsbad, California, is an affluent beachfront city located in the northern part of San Diego County. It occupies 39.1 square miles with 7 miles of coast along the Pacific Ocean. It lies 35 miles north of downtown San Diego and 87 miles south of Los Angeles. It has a population of approximately 106,000. The city was formed to avoid annexation by nearby Oceanside, and has a large population of ethnically diverse groups from around the world. The northern part of the city forms part of a tri-city area that also includes southern Oceanside and western Vista.
